A post by Michael Langford

Good poker takes:

1. Ability to think tactically
2. Ability to think strategically
3. Ability to understand other people
4. An ability to take results in stride
5. Experience

There is a friend of mine who I'm deathly afraid will start playing
poker with me becuase he has 1,2,3 and 4. I'd be terrified of him
after a month of reading and play. I wouldn't count any of these as
hard, especially for people who have these skills coming into poker.

Poker Skill is helped by:

6. Understanding of Probability/Expectatation
7. Ability to recruit losers/find losers to play with
8. Reading in the area (If nothing else to know what others have
read)

Number 7 can often be the determining factor in a tough game.

What's worse than 7-2 off?

According to a post on a google news group, there are starting hands in holdem which are worse than 7-2o — at least for heads-up play. Follow the link to find out how he came up with it; the hands are listed below.

Seven worst starting hands in holdem

Looking at this makes me wonder why a simple game of cards could be so complicated. It's almost as dumb as counting cards to win blackjack, which is an even easier game.

I was dreaming of you.
of us, on a trip, on a ship.
But without reason I awoke,
My lips curved in a smile.

I was across the bed.
I couldn't feel you, couldn't hear you.
But it dawned on me, suddenly,
That you were there.

I rolled into your arms.
Your hand on my back, in my hair.
But your warm body against mine
Made me forget which was the dream.

America looks to ancient Crete for ideas

The New York Times on the Web: New York to Hold Smaller Ceremonies Marking 9/11

"The second anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks will be marked by ceremonies involving children at ground zero."

My first thought: child sacrifices. Unfortunately, I'm sure the actual event will be much less entertaining.

Quad Aces

"The next best thing to playiing and winning, is playing and losing." — A. Alvarez

I played in a seven-person tourney last night. Before we got there, I was forewarned that the 35-year-old divorced male host was good. I placed third. Not too shabby, I guess. The crowning moment, however, was my four aces. Three on the flop and one in the hand.
Anyways, I'm ready to play again.

Black Widows

Not what I would consider a step forward for the women's rights movement, but I guess the Russians have to start somewhere.
Female Suicide Bombers Unnerve Russians: "'Chechens are turning these young girls into zombies using psychotropic drugs,' Mr. Yastrzhembsky said. 'I have heard that they rape them and record the rapes on video. After that, such Chechen girls have no chance at all of resuming a normal life in Chechnya. They have only one option: to blow themselves up with a bomb full of nails and ball bearings.'"

Rounders

Played my first game for money last night. Five guys and me, $25 pot (one person didn't play for cash). Jacob came in third, Omar second, and I won.
But I'm way too old to stay up till 4:30 a.m. (Altho' it was all definitley worth staying up for.)

Racket or Raquette?

When I hear discussions about how to spell "squash rackets" (neither of which is spelled that way, I think), I think maybe journalism is just too hard. Maybe I should be a physist instead.
